Tashkent The City of Tashkent Tashkent is one of the major cities in Central Asia. It is the capital of the Republic of Uzbekistan. Tashkent is located in the east of the country, a few dozen kilometers from the Kazakh border. Its territory covers 320 km². According to 2015 data, its population is over 2,371,300. It is also the capital of Tashkent Province (Toshkent viloyati). The population of Tashkent Province is 4,450,000. Its name means "stone citadel" (tash: stone and kand, kent: city or town, in Uzbek). In the past, it also bore the names Tchach, Chach (Shash), and Binkent. The first two names are analogous to the word tash and mean "stone." The name Binkent means "stone tower." The Greek geographer Ptolemy mentioned Tashkent as a crossroads where caravans from the East and West met. It was said that all precious stones could be found in Tashkent, which is why it was named Tashkent, meaning "the city of precious stones." Tashkent is located at 41° 16′ N 69° 13′ E. Tashkent's climate is continental, with mild winters and little snow. Summers are arid, with temperatures sometimes exceeding 40°C.
